Morpha brings the concept of ‘dining under the stars’ to Fulton Lane within Melbourne’s CBD. Hidden away within a quiet central city location, the design both reactivates the street and enriches the customer experience. Drawing inspiration from southeast Asian night markets characterised by hanging lanterns, the immersive atmosphere was
created through theatrical illumination, with a galaxy of lights suspended from different heights among glass and mirrors to create the illusion of a night sky. The play of light is dimmable, allowing for the atmosphere to be finely tuned as required. Indeed, the entire interior was considered to meet a variety of purposes – notably allowing for the venue’s dual functions of a bustling daytime café followed by a more intimate night-time restaurant – through multi-faceted joinery and an intelligent use of space. In both settings, the centrepiece is the bar, anchoring an area that is versatile, refined and sophisticated. Drawing on its urban position, the palette favours industrial-chic tones,
pushing the boundaries of everyday urban materials such as concrete and reinforced bars alongside brass detailing and custom wall designs. A geometric rhythm ties the space together, and reflects the classic grid of Melbourne’s concrete jungle to create a relaxed and refined interior. The interior design of Morpha elevates contemporary city
laneway dining, beneath a canopy of stars.
